Library and Information Studies 855: Art Librarianship
In Library and Information Studies: Art Librarianship, I learned about different areas of art librarianship like collection development, instruction, outreach, exhibitions and open access. As a final project for this course, I edited a Wikipedia article related to art history. I edited the Wikipedia article on Lenore Tawney, a multidisciplinary artist known for elevating fibers to the level of fine art in the 1960’s and 70’s. To prepare for this project, I learned about ethical practices and best standards when writing Wikipedia articles and how to reduce bias.
I improved Lenore Tawney’s Wikipedia article by removing inaccessible and biased sources, adding high-quality references, adding content, and reorganizing the article. First, I added references and citations from scholarly sources to confirm the accurate information already present. Next, I added information about the artist’s early life, career, and public collections and commissions. I reorganized her career and artwork sections and added Public Works and Commissions sections. In total I contributed 173 references and 7,490 words to the article.
During this project I explored the types of resources available at the Kohler Art Library and completed art historical research. I was surprised by the lack of high-quality and unbiased sources on a well-known artist available on the internet. This project was rewarding because I investigated an artist I was interested in and contributed to an open access resource.
